buzzing around his system, making him feel like a king, a god. He could do anything with this sort of energy. He could be a speedway star or win a disco-dancing competition or invent and successfully market a new household cleaning product. Knocking out a chapter of alien water sports shouldn’t be a problem, especially if the word processor’s thesaurus was operating. He paced the lift’s small floor space, eager to get to work. When he reached his floor Jason headed straight for his room. Ignoring the insult scratched into the varnish on his door he swept his key card over the lock and charged right in. And fell flat on his face. ‘Bum,’ moaned Jason, face down on the floor. Luckily for his nose, his instincts had been honed by years of keeling over drunk, getting into brawls and generally rolling from one crisis to the next. As soon as he felt himself go, his instincts had kicked in, twisting him around so that he hit the ground with his shoulder rather than his face. It ached, but there would be no permanent damage. Jason moved his leg, felt the tripwire still coiled around his ankle. He slid his foot out from under it, and rolled on to his back. He felt something cold and wet fall on to his face with a splat. The room was dark but, looking up, framed in the light from the open doorway, he could see the word ‘arsehole’ crudely painted on his ceiling in big, friendly, pink letters. Gerald Makhno had been burning the daytime oil. He wasn’t sure whether that was a sensible description of his day, but he felt it to be true enough. Supervising an academic convention was clearly some rare form of torture, and only worsened by having a boss who spent half the time shrieking hamsterly abuse at you, and the rest off doing some mysterious errands. Scoblow was clearly suffering from sexual frustration, and had insisted on destroying Makhno’s fantasies by going on endlessly about Benny and her husband. Her husband, for Goddess’ sake. Reconciled and everything. He had seen them wandering around The Hotel
